The future in 1948 is indeed an objection to my plan.
What was to come in the 60 years after 1948 was terrible indeed.
The tripling, tripling of the national outlay on health care as a share of the nation's resources.
The doubling of the burden of education.
The explosion of the cost of pensions.
The great surge in the aged population and a big rise in taxes.
In 1948, faced with a future of such savage austerity, there would be only one sensible course of action.
A return to 1890!

Well, I think it was when I was reading this stuff, reporting the Office for Budget Responsibilities projections for the next 50 years and what was going to happen to the economy and the burdens on us, you know, and quite a lot of what I read talked about how austere it was going to be.
And in 1948, it was indeed the case that healthcare, the burden, we'll put it like that, the burden of healthcare spending was about to triple.
Burden of education spending was going to double.
The number of people over retirement age from 10% to, I don't know, nearly 20 now, I think, 18, 19, 20%, something like that.
