People have looked at cognitive behavior therapy.
They've looked at family-based therapies.
They've been looking at integrative models, which include psychoeducation.
Probably the best evidence is for psychoeducation, which is really a package of skills, tools, and techniques to help people understand the illness and learn how best to manage the illness.
It's my pleasure.
Thank you, Norman.
We've known this since antiquity.
Hippocrates decided that depression was caused by an excess of black bile.
It's interesting, it's only been in the last two decades that we're beginning to understand what this black bile might actually be.
And the suggestion is, intriguingly,
that it's got something to do with our immune function.
Now, this is a bit of a break from conventional thinking, but it's increasingly clear that our brains are completely integrated into the physiology of the rest of the body, and what goes on in the brain alters the body, and what goes on in the body alters the brain.
Absolute pleasure.
Well, depression is a state of immune activation.
So there's a low-grade but demonstrable increase in inflammation that occurs not only in depression but in actually most major psychiatric disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.
In this regard, they're actually quite similar.
Well, inflammation is the body's defense against external assault.
And that assault, for the most part, is bugs, microbes.
And the body launches an immune reaction against infective insults using a variety of techniques.
So the body can launch antibodies.
