We think, if anything, the most promising compound is aspirin.
Good old-fashioned aspirin at the same kind of doses that people are taking for cardiovascular disease might actually play a role not only in the prevention of depression, but may play a role in treatment.
There's actually a lot of preclinical evidence, animal work, showing that aspirin enhances the effects of antidepressants.
But I have to say our primary interest is lifestyle factors.
And we're really interested in trying to understand the contribution particularly of diet, exercise, smoking and other reversible, potentially reversible lifestyle factors on risk.
Almost all of these work through inflammation.
We know that exercise is as effective as antidepressants.
All the studies that have compared exercise to antidepressants have pretty much shown that they're equivalent.
And yet we don't routinely prescribe exercise
it's as effective and it probably has far more benefit in terms of all the other problems that people are likely to have.
as we as scientists need to start looking at new ways of conceptualizing what's going on in depression because if we're brutally honest with ourselves, the whole antidepressant field has advanced minimally in the last 50 years and we desperately need new and better agents.
And the problem that we've had is we've been blinkered looking at serotonin and noradrenaline and saying the only new treatments that we're looking at are variations of a theme of the old medicines that work on those two things.
So we need to look at inflammation and oxidative stress in order to develop new treatments.
Absolutely.
So all the antidepressants we've got, they discovered the older generation of antidepressants quite accidentally.
And all we've done for the last 50 years is really refined them with one or two minor exceptions.
other thing that I think is probably important to note, and that is a balanced healthy diet that has enough fruit, vegetables, lean meat, fish, grains, and minimal junk food, high fats, high carbohydrates, saturated fat
Sugars.
you probably don't really need supplements.
You probably are okay in omega-3s.
