Correct.
And they can change the balance of these transmitters.
Absolutely, and it goes back to what we said right at the very beginning.
We know that inflammation not only increases risk for depression, but inflammation increases the risk of developing many common medical disorders.
Cardiovascular disease is probably the best.
We have very similar underlying drivers and pathways.
I think the extent to which depression contributes to cardiovascular risk is really underappreciated.
People who have major psychiatric illnesses are very much more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
We've taken the data that Michael and others have generated and tried to answer the question, can you do anything about this?
So we looked at whether taking anti-inflammatory medications alters your risk of developing depression.
And amazingly, it does.
So we found not only in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, but in another study, which is a study we did on cardiovascular disease, that taking a statin reduced your risk of developing depression by 80%.
We almost didn't believe it when we first saw it, and I still think we have to be very cautious about this.
But I think we really do need to start looking at anti-inflammatory strategies, not only in preventative but also in treatment studies.
Intriguingly, there is some evidence that they might actually be useful, not only for prevention but for treatment.

The whole point of looking at that is to say, does inflammation matter?
And we think it clearly does.
