How did they get out of this?
Well, in the Bible, it says the angel of the Lord went out and killed many of the soldiers.
Well, what's interesting in the Assyrian annals, we find that Sennacherib talks about conquering city after city, but he left Hezekiah in Jerusalem caged like a bird.
So it's an odd slip of the tongue, a slip of embarrassment.
Why would they just say, why not conquer Jerusalem?
Why leave him caged like a bird?
Well, even later sources like Herodotus will say that a massive plague killed thousands of Sennacherib soldiers.
So here we have outside sources confirming what we see in the biblical narrative.
They're just telling it from a different perspective.
And even the Assyrians had to admit they could not conquer Jerusalem.
Yeah, that's a good question.
That's a whole thing right in and of itself.
So for one thing, I think there's a lot of hyperbole happening in the text.
So, for example, in chapter 8, it says the water was receding and the tops of the mountains were seen.
Okay, interesting, so land is appearing.
But then in Genesis 8-9, it says when Noah released the dove, it says the dove found no place to set its foot for the waters were on the face of the whole earth.
Okay, well, maybe because it's that it's using hyperbole to describe this flood, and it was a massive regional flood.
Interesting enough, we do find some evidence that in ancient Mesopotamia, thousands upon thousands of years ago, the entire region became what would be called a mega lake for about a year, and then the water slowly receded out.
Prior to that time also, the Persian Gulf was a known land.
