Falling gasoline prices in June are forecast to produce the first month-over-month decline in the Consumer Price Index in six years, with annual inflation falling below 4%.
Ordinarily good news, but with renewed fighting, gas prices are rising again.
And more important to the Fed, core prices are forecast unchanged, suggesting no improvement in underlying inflation.
And no doubt that will be the predicate for House members questioning Fed Chair Kevin Walsh 90 minutes after the CPI report is released.
The new Fed leader has vowed to bring inflation under control.
It hasn't reached the central bank's 2% target in more than five years.
Lawmakers will be focused on whether Warsh thinks interest rates will have to rise to get there, something President Trump has warned against.
They may not get much of an answer.
Warsh has pledged to limit Fed guidance on rates.
