Thanks so much for having me.
Most of us can probably relate to the fact that if you're sore, you mentioned your knee, some people maybe have a toothache, it really disturbs your sleep.
But the evidence is really building towards this bidirectional relationship in that poor sleep accidentally worsens your pain.
And we do know that after a bad night's sleep, pain can increase the next day.
So we think maybe the melatonin itself has some factors and components to it, but we think the sleep is a key ingredient to this.
Yeah, so sleep in itself is really important for recovery.
So at night when we sleep, our brain maybe seems asleep, but it's actually not asleep.
And it's actually clearing waste, if you like, from our brains that sort of builds up during the day and can aggravate inflammatory processes and pain processing through the brain and the spinal cord.
So it really is an act of clearing out if you like unwanted substances that can exacerbate that pain experience.
But in addition to the sort of biology of what I suppose is the behavioral, psychosocial part of it, and again, most of us can relate to not sleeping great and feeling a bit crap the next day, or mood's not great, a bit disinterested in doing things.
And all of those things are really closely linked to that pain experience.
So tell us about the study.
Yeah, so the study in itself, we reviewed sort of what we would call the best evidence or the best available evidence, I should say.
It's 23 clinical trials and all up we had just over 2,000 people.
And as you'd expect, we found that melatonin did improve sleep.
That's why most of us would actually take melatonin.
But alongside that, we found that it produced what we'd maybe describe as a modest, slight modest improvement in chronic musculoskeletal pain itself.
So we did two types of analyses.
One was with post-operative pain and then one were folks with what we would describe as chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Yeah, or...
