low back pain is another common one that we would do.
Yes, and that's the challenge because we can't answer that with any sort of degree of confidence.
We've seen that in the post-operative patients
So these are folks with surgery that melatonin compared to placebo does have an effect.
And that was consistent when we took the really good studies, if you like.
So that was consistent.
So if you take melatonin versus placebo, it does seem to have an effect on pain.
But when you compare it to other types of pain medications, it doesn't seem to have a greater benefit.
Yeah, great question.
And I cannot give you an answer for that.
Because right now, even though it sounds a lot, you know, when you say to somebody 2,000 people, that's a lot.
That's, you know, 23 studies, that does sound a lot.
But when you try to break it down, you know, by population or by condition, we don't have that kind of evidence.
It's very few studies, really.
And I would stress also that, you know, even though we had
quite a few participants in these trials overall we would describe the evidence as quite weak so we're not super confident in these findings however I would maybe add to the broader landscape of this when we look at sleep so one of the first line treatments for insomnia for example and insomnia is where people have difficulty getting to sleep staying asleep or waking up early
over a period of time, maybe three months.
So the first line treatment for that is actually cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.
And what's super interesting is that when we look at the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, we also see these benefits, similar benefits on pain.
So melatonin is a mechanism, if you like, to improve sleep, but there are other strategies as well to improve sleep, and we have similar sort of observations on their benefits of pain.
