It's a pretty striking finding.
It comes from a new study that we just covered, and it found that basically immediately after a male manager has a daughter, women's earnings at his firm go up.
Right.
How can this be?
How can an infant baby girl affect workplace salaries at her dad's company?
If you look at the charts in the story, it's quite a significant effect.
The ratio of female to male earnings goes up by more than 4% if the men have a daughter.
And the share of women working at the firm goes up by a similar amount, too.
We're talking here specifically about small firms in Denmark.
One of the authors, Nina Smith, she's an economist there.
The other author is Madalena Ronchi in the U.S.
And together they tracked every worker at these companies over 25 years.
Sons had no effect.
So, of course, this isn't in the form of a bonus, right?
If my manager has a daughter next year, I'm not getting a 4% raise.
Instead, the data point to this being about hiring decisions.
So it seems like it influences...
who men, male managers, pick for new hires and to a lesser extent for promotions.
Actually, the probability that the best paid person at the firm is a woman goes up by two percentage points.
So it's a measurable impact.
