And Martin Bryant, it's just hard to even comprehend, got out and hunted them down.
I spoke to Kathy Gordon, who had been in the Broad Arrow Cafe just moments before the gunshots began.
In the Broad Arrow Cafe, 19 people died in the space of 90 seconds.
Just imagine that.
Kathy had fled, and she saw Nanette and the girls killed, had a shot fired at her, just narrowly missing her head, still embedded in the cathedral over to my right.
She has had a terrible three decades.
She says she's learned to live with the trauma, but
In that period, she suffered from PTSD.
She had thoughts of taking her own life and has even been homeless.
So it's been a real journey.
And I think there are different extremes of that for survivors.
But I guess there's a common thread that time doesn't heal these things.
They learn to deal with it and hopefully push forward with life.
But it's a defining moment.
Another said that it was a second, but it lasted a lifetime.
And I guess...
Anniversaries like this, three decades on, it brings a rush of those kind of feelings back to the surface for not only the survivors, but the first responders who came to witness just the most horrific deeds.
And you've got to remember that...
that there was a gun battle that raged on for hours afterwards.
So they were going in to try and rescue the wounded and also identify the dead while the gunman was holed up in a cottage not far away firing shots at police.
