But I can get why you might upset people, but certainly how I relate to you is you come from a point of caring, and sometimes when people really care about things, they're not as effective in how they communicate it as they could or should be.
But I think one thing I learned as a leader, particularly when I worked in Asia where things are not spoken as black and white as they would be saying in America, that you really listen for what I call the unsaid.
And so someone might – I remember I first went to China.
I had a young guy there who worked for me.
He spoke reasonably good English.
I spoke basically no Mandarin.
So I would talk to him about something.
And I remember one time saying, Tong, could you do this for me, please?
And he said, oh, yeah, that would be really difficult.
And I thought, oh, okay, this is having read 101, how to work in Asia.
I thought this is my time to give him some face.
So in a very New Zealand way, I said, yeah, I can realise it's like that, but the reason I want –
you to do it because actually you're the best guy to do it.
I thought I'd build on some love and respect for the guy.
And he said, oh, that would be really difficult.
And I went around it again.
After a period of time, I realized he was saying no.
But in Asia, it's very difficult, certainly that generation, for people to say no to the boss, particularly a foreign boss.
So that's one thing I think I've learned to get better at is listening for the intent that people have rather than just the words that come out of their mouth.
So that's how I relate to you.
