Now, when we think about global diseases, we think about bacteria, we think about viruses.
But this is a really important class of infections that is growing in severity.
So Candida auris, this is a fungus that was first discovered in the 90s by Korean scientists and really identified by Japanese scientists in 2009.
It has been a growing problem in the United States since that time.
As of the first half of this year, there have been just over 3000 cases.
But the issue here and the reason that scientists are so concerned is because this is a multi drug resistant infection.
What that means is that right now we have very few drugs that can treat it.
And so when someone is infected, it can be a very serious condition.
And that's particularly true because this fungus tends to stalk hospital wards, nursing homes, places where people are already very vulnerable.
When they do get infected, we have very few drugs that are available to treat them.
And Soni, can you just tell me what that infection looks like?
Like, what are some of the symptoms that people might display if they contract candida?
And how would this fungus spread?
One of the issues here is that the symptoms of this type of infection can be kind of vague.
It's things like fever, lethargy, you know, a higher heart rate.
And so because this is a growing problem, doctors might not initially know to look for it.
And the symptoms are kind of vague and unspecific.
There are a lot of things that can cause those symptoms.
That said, in particular, in these kind of high risk settings that I was talking about, hospitals, nursing homes, there is growing awareness and doctors are kind of learning to look for this type of infection.
Tony, just calibrate how concerned I should be here because, you know, there's a lot of information out there.
