These are kind of vague symptoms.

They often, you know, occur, it seems like, in people who maybe already have some health conditions that could be pretty concerning.

So what should we be concerned about?

And if you do contract candida, how can it be treated?

Well, I think that if you're someone who is in a hospital or living in a nursing home and you contract this, you should be very concerned.

There are some estimates that the death rate can be between 30 and 60 percent, which is really high.

And again, this is for people who are already experiencing a lot of underlying illness.

They might be already very sick.

I think that if you're maybe more of the average person, an everyday American, the threat here is really more existential, but it is very concerning.

We are living in a world where there is a growing threat of antimicrobial

resistance what this means is that a lot of viruses bacteria and fungus are evolving more quickly than we can develop drugs to treat them and so that is an increasing threat because this particular bug this fungus candida oris it is evolving so quickly that it is now multi-drug resistant and it is a huge problem we're seeing that in particular with funguses like this

where there's just not drugs to treat them.

But if we don't pick up the pace of drug development, scientists and researchers warn that we're going to increasingly see this type of problem with other types of pathogens.

So it's kind of all part of this existential threat that these bugs are evolving and the pace of drug development is not keeping up to match.
