Water and electricity don't mix.

You probably heard that since you were a little kid.

Well, in recent days, that advice has taken on a frightening new meaning.

Last week, authorities in Minnesota announced they discovered some 30 different water systems across the state had been hit with a cyber attack.

For a few hours, Braham, a city about 70 miles north of Minneapolis, asked its residents to cut down on their water use while they investigated an outage at a water facility, which they later said had been caused by hackers.

Right now, the water plant is completely disconnected from the internet, but we're looking back to the state on helping out with a lot of this stuff.

We're hoping for some more information as far as mitigation measures.

Now, the city ultimately got things back up and running, said water quality wasn't disrupted.

But then over the weekend, we learned Michigan had also seen hacking attempts target its water systems.

And now sources are telling ABC News these cyber attacks could be far more widespread than we initially thought.

Let's bring in ABC's Josh Margolin for more on this.

Josh, how many states are we talking about here?

And when we say water facilities, what does that really mean?

So water facilities, we're referring to water utilities, water systems and wastewater.

So sewage treatment.

So those are the two kinds of systems we're talking about.

Our sources are saying to us that it could be a dozen states.

Now, not necessarily every system in every single state, but that there are systems in perhaps as many as a dozen, maybe more states.
