One of the discoveries I made in my research were previously unseen confidential documents from the NRA from the early 1980s, where you could see them having meetings behind closed doors, the leadership talking about strategies to get more kids involved with guns.
And one of the projects they had at the time was trying to get marksmanship programs, rifle shooting integrated into school phys ed curriculums.
And the reason they were trying to do that, and in their own words, they said that they felt this is a good way to slip it in.
They were trying to basically figure out a way to do it that wouldn't get a lot of attention.
If they put it into an existing athletic program, I thought that would be one way to do it.
So I find it interesting because it kind of shows an awareness on their part that what they were doing could be viewed with objection by people.
And then you have the gun industry itself coming out with studies in the early 2010s, looking at how they can use, and this is again, in their own, in their own words, use kids from gun friendly families as what they called peer ambassadors to try to influence.
other kids who may be leery about guns or came from families that didn't like guns and try to get them interested in guns by kind of luring them into like playing paintball or archery or things like this with a goal of eventually getting up to actual firearms.
So, I mean, this is the kind of stuff that has been going on behind the scenes to try to basically sort of inculcate an interest in guns and kids and young people.
And there's also a lot of more public ways they've been doing it with youth groups and things like that, showering them with cash and equipment.
But yeah, no, it's a very serious long-term goal of the industry and the lobby to basically out of self-preservation to try to get future generations interested in using and, of course, buying guns.
it's a really good question that I wish I had the answer.
You would have thought that what happened at Sandy Hook would have been that, that moment.
And for, for a little while, it seemed like it could have been, but it very quickly, I think evaporated.
And, you know, there was a pretty interesting observation by, I think it was a British newspaper columnist who you basically said that was the point where, you know, America kind of, um,
basically decided that the deaths of little children were acceptable losses.
I mean, it's kind of sad that it took somebody from outside the country to make that observation.
But if that didn't do it, I'm not quite sure what would, because that was such a horrific tragedy.
I happened to live close by in Connecticut when that happened.
