Yeah, it was still like an artist by Austin Kleon.
And I guess just briefly to tell the story, I was in college and I was writing songs on my guitar.
And then I would go get a burrito with my friends and hear a song on the radio and realize that I had ripped off a chord progression or a melody line from some other song that I was already familiar with.
And I felt like I just don't have what these other people have.
They're able to get
lightning in a bottle and the idea just comes fully formed.
Somehow they're able to synthesize this and they get this, they're creating out of nothing.
And I was like, I just can't do that.
All I can do is kind of remix things.
And then I read Steel Like an Artist by Austin Kleon where he's talking about your job as the artist really is to connect preexisting dots in new and interesting ways.
But when you create something new, you're connecting these dots, the dots themselves are not completely original.
And that's kind of what gave me permission to create.
Because before that, I was like, well, I can't just make something out of nothing like everybody else can.
I guess I'm kind of like stealing stuff.
And then when he's like, steal like an artist, I'm like, oh, OK.
So that is the process.
Creativity is a formula.
And I kind of built a career out of that.
I left the family business, was working with Asian Efficiency for a while.
And at one point I was running the Productivity Show podcast, which published every week.
