Well, what was especially unusual was that I read that Homeland Security Investigations, HSI, was involved in this arrest.
That is very weird, folks.
DHS is a department with a $60 billion annual budget and 250,000 employees and almost never has any business involving itself in some sort of domestic arrest like this that allegedly has to do with disturbing worshipers, blah, blah, blah, whatever the administration is going to say.
HSI is not the agency you would see on the scene.
You'd normally see the FBI go make an arrest like this.
The fact that DHS agents were involved, I am telling you right now, is a seminal moment.
They are sending them to involve themselves in investigations that DHS doesn't have anything to do with.
Now, I would tell you, if I was told to do this when I was chief of staff at DHS, I would have told the White House, go pound sand.
That doesn't have to do with our mission.
Arresting journalists ain't part of what we do.
It is spooky as hell that my former department had agents involved in this arrest.
That's a big deal.
But the other thing I would say is this.
Because of the peculiarities around this, like all authoritarians, this administration thought they were making an example out of Don.
And they instead made a martyr.
That's where authoritarians, that's when you know they are screwing up.
You want to go back in history and see what inflection points look like?
Inflection points happen when the regime stops being able to make a point and intimidate people into silence, and they make a martyr.
