Claire, there's a sense in Machado's work that he really despises mediocrity.

And also I would say that although Machado is described as a realist, it seems to me as though there are the seeds of modernism in what Machado is doing as well.

But he also, he writes quite economically, which, if I might say, is not necessarily a Brazilian trait of short books, short sentences, short chapters.
He's a very efficient writer.
