Ana Claudia, finally for you, what do you think Machado's appeal is today?

He remains the lodestar of Brazilian literature.

Certainly among writers and scholars, he enjoys a huge reputation.

But Machado is not that well known by a general public outside Brazil.

Why do you think that's the case?

So why is it so important?

So it seems to me that one of the real strengths of his work is that those things which he critiques, aspects of Brazilian society, the elite, the way the elite ignores the mass of other Brazilians, primarily Afro-Brazilians, the inequality.

The entitlement.

These are phenomena which, when you go to Brazil today, they're all still there.

They're all visible.

Machado was writing about Brazil 100 years ago, but he's also writing about Brazil today.

Is that a fair enough comment?

And he's initially seen as a romantic author with a capital R. And then he becomes what's described as a realist author.

But what does realism mean within the Brazilian context?

In a bleak way, exactly, that's right.
