So it seems there was, I mean, what happens in the 1930s in Brazil is that you start to get the creation of the myth of Brazil being a non-racial society where everyone, it doesn't matter what you're born, you have the same equal opportunities.

But that, of course, doesn't reflect the economic reality in Brazil.

But tell me, Machado was, as you pointed out, Viv, he was writing at a time where there was this huge campaign to whiten Brazilian society.

Who was driving that amongst the elites?

Why did they want to whiten Brazilian society?

So they were associating modernity with whiteness and Europeanness.

I have to say that attitude towards criminality and Afro-Brazilian persists to this day in Brazil, sadly.

So, and in terms of the literature, after Machado, Brazilian literature must have gained quite a deal of self-confidence because of his work.

And he becomes recognized as the sort of this towering figure fairly early on in Brazil.

Would you see people like Jorge Armado, who's writing a little later, or later on Clarice Lispector?

These are also great, great figures of Brazilian literature.

Do they all admit a debt to Machado?
