aspects that science breaks down for this is actually dopamine scrolling that it's actually i'm sure these can conflate and a lot of times when you're on tiktok or instagram you're not choosing which one you're doing so you probably get some good some bad and we'll talk about how that affects emotional regulation but dopamine scrolling as you can guess is just like every time you flip
you get a hit of dopamine and that's because every time but what if the video is like boring so that's the most interesting thing about dopamine is that it's like the anticipation like of course when you first learn about a reward you associate the reward with dopamine but as you begin to anticipate that reward that's like where dopamine starts to spike phones are so fucked
So it's more active when you have an unpredictable reward versus a guaranteed one, which is what these like optimize.
And so obviously there may be even like part of the algorithms that know this.
It's almost like better like a slot machine if some of the things are kind of boring, kind of stupid, because then when you get the video that makes you laugh or cry or whatever, it's like that dopamine reward because it was unpredictable is growing and growing and growing.
So it's literally like every time you flip your thumb, you're getting a hit of dopamine.
It is.
And think about like within minutes, how many times you can flip, how many hits of dopamine you're getting and what that's doing to your brain.
The research has found that it's like extremely habit forming for almost everyone.
Obviously, the more you're like, think of like,
if you're working on a project or I don't know, something for school, like to get to the stage of like the anticipation of the reward is like really long.
So to build habits around like quote unquote healthy habits, whether that's the gym or working or whatever, like you deem as reading a book.
Yeah.
Like the dopamine comes once in a while and that's why it takes so long to build habits.
But if you have a phone, it's like these habits form so fast and,
And what is kind of more scary is that over time, the studies show the unpredictable reward pattern, you like build a tolerance to it.
And so you literally need more.
Like a drug in a way, like your ability to feel satisfied goes back to baseline because now you expect like, oh, maybe every third or fourth unconsciously, like every third or fourth video should give you a kick.
Now, when you know that you're like,
They say people start to scroll faster.
