But not just that, it was kind of this realization that a lot of the language charities like that use is language that pities the disabled person or demeans the disabled person in the name of pulling on the heartstrings to get those donations.

Because if you say like, oh, you can live a wonderful life as a blind person.

Why are we donating to cure blindness?

So the way we speak about it is to say, oh, this poor little girl is going to go blind and she won't be able to drive and she won't be able to look in the mirror, see her child smile one day, like how hard that will be for her.

So we must make sure that doesn't happen.

So open your wallets.

That was kind of like the language I had heard spoken around me about my disability my whole life.

So that was a part of what made the reality of my blindness that much more challenging was that the language I had been filled with was how awful blindness is.

Not how wonderful life can still be if you go blind.

So it made my depression and my suicidal ideation that much more real.

And so I had to do a lot of work to separate from that ideology and that language around disability and learn that like, no, I can live a beautiful life as a blind person.

person and I am whole.

I'm not broken.

I don't need to be changed, fixed or healed.

I am whole as I am.

This is who I was intended to be and I can live a beautiful life this way.

So I did a lot of work to like untangle that narrative that had been kind of filled into my head since the time I was like this impressionable little girl.

And then I had that negative charity experience.

So I think for me now, to be honest, I'm very critical of charities.

And it just simply stems from my own trauma and negative experiences with not one but two and the harm that they did in my life.
