And the way I kind of can relate it, which it's a bit morbid, so prepare yourselves, but it's the kind of best comparison I can give, is that we all know that more likely than not, our parents will pass before we do.

but we don't pre-grieve.

We do not emotionally prepare for the hole that will be left in our lives when they go.

That is only something you can do when you're faced with that reality.

And it's the same for me with my vision loss.

So at 14 years old, I lost the majority of my vision much younger and faster than the doctors had anticipated.

I spiraled into a very deep depression.

I was suicidal and I at the same time lost all of my friends, became severely bullied and was looking for purpose.

I was looking for a sense of direction and community.

And I think this is how many people find themselves in situations like I was, where I spent so many years after my vision loss asking, why me?

And I was trying to fill that why me with purpose.

And I felt like the answer to why me is, well, if I can do something good with my story, if I can help other people with what I've been through, then what I've been through isn't all for nothing.

And at that same time of looking for purpose, I was looking for a community that accepted me and made me feel a part of something because I had lost all of my friends and I'm a naturally very extroverted, bubbly person.

So it was very hard socially to feel like an outsider.

And at 18 years old, I was getting ready to graduate high school and I was looking around at colleges and universities and nothing really felt like it.

fit what I wanted to do with my life.

I wanted to be a motivational speaker to live that purpose, part of my journey.

And for my 18th birthday, I ended up being given tickets to go see this motivational speaker.

And I was enraptured with him.

I was so inspired.
