It was a part of my story.
It's a part of my life and my journey and it made me who I am.
And if anything, it's helped me develop a lot of empathy and understanding for other people.
I truly don't ask how somebody could end up in a cult because while I wasn't in a cult in the traditional sense, I was certainly in something adjacent to it that had many similar practices.
And
I know what a slippery slope it is.
And I know the types of people that are ripened for it, right?
Like I had so many experiences in my formative years that did make me the perfect target for this very circumstance.
And it's the same for many other people.
Many people are just looking for a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, a sense of direction and community.
And when you find that in somebody who feels powerful and all knowing, it just feels like, oh, this is a person I've been seeking.
And it compounds.
It slowly builds.
It's not like they're like, drink the Kool-Aid right away.
It's something that slowly happens over time.
And a lot of it is rationalized to you.
A lot of it seems like, oh yeah, that makes sense.
Like when you boil it all down, like, oh yeah.
Yeah, that totally makes sense that I would live in staff housing instead of taking a higher salary.
Or like you get discount on the clothing and everybody else is wearing it and you want to feel a part of it.
