And there are these kids at the time whose parents would have been upset that they were zoot-suting, right?
They would leave the house in these wide-legged pants, take, like, needle and thread with them, peg the leg once they got outside, and then before they came home, they would cut the stitches off and then just come back in, like, in their regular pants.
Well, people do it all the time.
You think about punk, right?
Yeah, of course.
Or if you think about, you know, hip-hop, the ways that some folks would, you know, you weren't wearing that gold chain inside the house, but you might put it on when you got down the block, right?
This was, of course, going to affect the zoot suit, which was excessively using wool.
So zoot suits were kind of banned.
But that pointing out of them as part of the problem actually made them in some ways even more desirable and interesting.
There were tons of zoots already out there.
People were still wearing them.
So they had certain forms of disposable income to spend on things like going out to the Savoy Ballroom, like jazz clubs, movie theatres, buying clothes.
It's not just the suit that is unpatriotic, but it's who's in the suit.

who are you, right, from an idea of Americanness.
Who is democracy for?
And if we're fighting for democracy, what kinds of rights do any of these ethnic minorities have in the U.S.
presently, right?
