There's a lot of debate in ethnic communities about their relationship to the war effort.
as well as a lot of debate and concern from majority white soldiers in the military industry about the loyalty of, quote unquote, new Americans.
So there's a lot of politics and culture happening here that gets wrapped up, right, in the zoot suit and the people who are wearing it.
That happens near the Sleepy Lagoon Reservoir in Los Angeles, which is in a kind of Mexican-American area.
And a young man named Jose Diaz was stabbed at a party and left to die.
When the police investigate this murder...
rather than investigating as you would step-by-step process, right?
Instead, they do a kind of what we call a kind of dragnet.
They haul in untold numbers of pachucos.
because they're thinking this is a gang-related incident, right, between two different groups who were living in the same barrio.
And they just start hauling young Mexican-American men into jail, like really aggressively, violently, just searching through the community, in some ways trying to assert their control over the situation.
22 people are charged, but many, many more were arrested and assaulted.
The 22 go on trial.
On very little evidence, they are convicted.
People like Orson Welles, like the famous director, he and many, many other sort of Hollywood folks were on this defense list.
They did mount an appeal and they were acquitted.
Every single one of them was acquitted of this crime.
So they were all let free.
The investigation that came out of this absolutely said that this had been a miscarriage of justice linked to the racial and ethnic identity of the kids that were involved.
They were all wearing zoot suits.
