So that whatever prejudices were out there about, I mean, some legit and some not legit, right, about the suit being tied to a Mexican-American gang activity was deliberately reinforcing the relationship of Mexican-Americans' criminality and the suit.
Yes, absolutely.
And there's certain things that happened in the early moments of hip hop that were really similar, especially around sneakers.
People wearing oversized pants and a certain kind of basketball shoe.
They were criminalized.
The war is going on.
There are many, many soldiers stationed in Los Angeles at this time.
There are many, many youth of color also in Los Angeles at this time.
There's just a lot of tension in the air.
And after the Sleepy Lagoon incident, people on very high alert, looking out for un-American activity.
So a group of soldiers actually take it upon themselves to sort of
attack zoot-suited youth.
And they attack these Mexican-American youth, right, sort of en masse.
It starts first in the kind of entertainment district.
So one of the things that's also happening at this time is these young Mexican-Americans are kind of first-generation American, and they are asserting their belonging, not only to the U.S., but to Los Angeles.
