So they
go out of their quote-unquote own neighborhoods to movie theaters, jazz clubs, or whatever that are quote-unquote downtown, outside of the barrio.
They are just out taking up public space.
They go, haul zoot-suited youth outside of jazz clubs, music theaters, beat them up.
But also, this is where it's just so much of a fashion story, strip the suits off of them.
tear the suits up, beat people up, but also disrobe them.
And this, of course, is just a very old form of punishment that is very much about inflicting shame and humiliation.
Eventually, they cross a boundary.
They go into barrios, looking for zoot-suited youth and or young Mexican-Americans.
So eventually, it becomes not even about the suit, but about the people.
The soldiers get reinforcements from other white civilians.
The Chicano Pachuco crowd also gets reinforcements from fellow African Americans, as well as some of the other Asian Americans who are there.
It becomes a full-scale riot.
Riots over days, over a week of just incredible violence.
Not a lot of loss of life, which is interesting, but a lot of injured people.
It only ends because the military demands that all of the soldiers go back to the barracks and in some ways they lock the door.
I feel like this riot is both encapsulating the past and forecasting in some ways into the future.
I do see this riot, again, as this contest of Americanness, right?
It's about who fits into that category.
It's about who democracy serves, who it's for.
