One of the Fisher brothers at the time, Zachary Fisher, stepped in and bought it because he realized how important this was as a legacy to America's warfighters.
He bought it, then talked to Mayor Koch at the time and said, you know what, I think I can help you turn this into a museum off the West Side Highway.
And he said, well, if you can make it happen in Hell's Kitchen, it's pretty shady down there, but if you help repair the whole area, I'll let you do it.
Boom, they did it.
And that's what saved the ship.
