There's nothing like trying to summarize pharmacy benefit managers very quickly, but these are basically the middlemen who operate between the pharmaceutical companies where the drugs are purchased and then the insurance companies as well as the pharmacists.
And while they play a good role in terms of processing drugs,
claims and things like that for pharmacies, they have been accused on a national level.
There's actually some federal legislation being put in place against them as well to try and make them be more transparent.
What they would do is get a big rebate from the pharmaceutical company and then not pass that rebate on, and they would charge the money to the pharmacists.
And it just really made some...
Well, I mean, we've got pharmacists basically, especially in rural communities, going out of business.
Because I had one pharmacist who talked to us at the statehouse who said that I think it was 78% of his, 77 or 78% of the prescriptions that he filled were filled for under the cost.
He was paid under what it cost to fill them.
And so he said, we like sell bags in the pharmacy to try and make up the difference is how they work.
So anyway, this did pass and it's brought a lot of should bring some transparency, assuming that Governor Kelly signs this.
And also, just of note, the biggest problem with this bill for a lot of people was that there was a dispensing fee that will be paid per prescription fee.
of $10.50.
And there were a lot of people in the public who thought that this would just like show up on their receipt as a $10.50 charge.
That is not how it works.
It is absorbed basically through some of the contracts that are done in the background.
And Ohio, for instance, put one in place that was $9 dispensing fee and then put all the other same things that we did in place.
And in the first two years of doing that, they saved $330 million on their Medicaid program alone.
