Um I think the the state feels just out of shape.
So it's it's big.
But it's actually quite weak.
Um, so it's too weak to pick up a bin in Birmingham or to stop the boats or to get a phone answered at a at a G P.
It's incredibly centralized.
Uh Whitehall is
like the last street of an empire.
It's that centralized.
But at the same time the center itself, uh doesn't feel that strong.
And we had begun the work to fix that, to start making things uh more strategic, um, strengthening the centre.
But it w it was weaker than we when we first began.
So Keir Kier's focus was rightly how do we how do we fix these why do we fix these problems?
I think we were in an era when we it when the when the communications environment had changed very, very rapidly as well.
Trust in politics and politicians is very, very low.
And so we we w we weren't doing enough to visibly govern to show what we were doing.
We were not doing enough focus on on the short term.
So the first budget was rightly saying we need to invest in the country's infrastructure, rail, water infrastructure.
We said we wouldn't put up national insurance VAT or or income tax and we didn't put put up national insurance VAT or income tax.
But we said we wouldn't put up those taxes, that was a promise we made to people, and those were the taxes that we we we didn't put up uh and we stuck to that manifesto commitment.
We said we would put up other taxes, like VAT on public schools, um and uh dealing with non DOMs and and those were the taxes that we It's never gonna be enough though, was it, to do the things you wanted to do.
