But many of the people, and I still believe this, who are best equipped to serve are
are not people who are going to raise their hand and sign up for it.
And so there was a lot of conversation thought around the kind of candidate who could win Maine would be a veteran, would be someone from outside of the Portland area, a community in which Trump won, and someone tied to an industry that has a specific resonance in Maine.
The kind of waterfront industry was a leading factor there.
And that was then a broader process and a series of meetings that led folks to Graham.
I think it's listening to the kind of specificities of an area and the specificities of the problems facing that area and seeing like, who's the voice that should be representing these people?

Who's most in touch?
I think we have a problem of like the lived realities of so many of the people who run for office are so disconnected from the lived realities of the people they're running to represent.
There is a friction there that is impossible to reconcile.
And so how do you overcome that?
You need people who don't have that same gap.
Troy was really committed to running for governor at the time.
I think if Troy Jackson was running for Senate, there would not have been a process.
I saw someone who lived on the same road he grew up on, who clearly loved Maine a lot, and who I thought really articulated in a powerful way, both a story that could capture the anger and angst that so many people feel over the status quo, but also had like an affirmative vision of what government could do about it.
There were a number of meetings of which I was not a part of, but the kind of entire process was not limited.
You know, it was an extended process that landed on Graham.

I think the state Senate tried to recruit him in 2020.
