Welcome back to The Prosperity Project.
We're talking about the art and the science of negotiating.
And Noah, we started talking about the example of...
selling a house or buying a house and that the two parties have different vested interests.
One wants the highest price, one wants the lowest price.
So how can you negotiate in the best interests of both of you to get an outcome everyone's happy with?
So I guess you would take the same approach if you were, say, negotiating a job contract.
Okay, this is the top dollar they could possibly pay.
You'd like higher, but maybe you could work from home.
Maybe you could have a car parking space, whatever.
You know, it's a...
the other negotiables that sit around it that you can use to your advantage.
So is it then down to how you prepare for a negotiation?
Is it doing your homework, trying to scope out what the party on the other side of the table wants and is willing to flex on?
There's a lot of negotiation.
I mean, yes, there's the preparation, but is some of it actually just the psychology of making people feel like they've been heard and that they are getting what they want?
So some people do use manipulation and they do put the PR spin on what they're offering rather than tailoring it.
But I suppose that can come unstuck if, say, you and I are going to work together after that.
You're going to work out pretty soon that I just used some pretty flowery words, but I sold you a pup.
Speaking of assumptions, I think I've made a few about negotiating and we might unpack a few of those, but we need to take another quick break.
