Good morning.
I did write a speech.
No, I'm not going to read it because you pretty much said everything I was going to say.
But I'm really excited to be here.
My name is Judge Florence Taylor Barner.
For those who don't know me, I am a first generation American.
I am the first in my family to graduate from high school in this country, the first to go to law school, first to go to college, first to do a lot of things, but not the last.
And I wanted to share that with you all here today.
Thank you.
Because the reason that I get to stand here today before you is because of that man right there, my father.
I watched my parents sacrifice everything to leave Haiti, to flee a dictatorship, to come to this country, to work harder than anyone I've ever known in my life, to push their kids to do more than they thought that they could ever dream.
And I'm just so grateful to my dad for believing in me, for all of you, because I remember when I was running for judge, nobody knew me, but you all took a chance on me.
And that's what my dad taught me, take a chance, because what's the worst that could happen, right?
And I did.
And because of you, we were able to do some wonderful things.
We have started the first and only community courts in the state of Florida.
If you don't know what that is, that is a court for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
And they get a chance at really a fresh start.
And the folks in this room, every one of you have contributed to it.
Truthfully, you really have.
