When I was first informed of this proclamation, I was in disbelief.
I think I still am, so many cameras.
The first thought that came to mind is the opening lines from a verse in scripture, specifically in 1 Chronicles, and it starts off by saying, who am I and who are my people?
I am the daughter of Haitian immigrants who came to this country with very little, but who gave me everything.
They gave me their languages, their unwavering faith in God, their resilience, and their unshakable sense of who I am.
Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, surrounded by a vibrant Haitian community, I learned early that our culture is not just something we carry, it's something we celebrate, protect, and we pass it on.
Our guiding principles were summed up in the three L's, l'église, l'école, and l'accueil.
which mean church, school, and home, but our values stemmed from the interactions and the experiences we had in those places.
At the time, I wasn't old enough to understand what my parents were teaching me as well, which was , and that is work.
The opportunity to work with an organization, to be employed and entrusted, to do meaningful work, is something I do with a high sense of responsibility and courage, even while navigating uncertainties.
Being Haitian has shaped every part of my journey.
It's why I chose to dedicate my doctoral research to study the identity development experiences of Haitian college students.
The young people navigating two worlds just as I once did and still am doing many times.
Most stays chaotically but always beautifully and uniquely in our own ways.
It's also why I show up to work every day in my work environment, committed to creating spaces for people who don't look like me so that they can feel seen, valued, and know that they belong.
To the Haitian community here in Broward County, my family, friends, my church family, and my colleagues at the Florida Panthers, this recognition belongs to all of us.
To every Haitian parent who sacrificed, every Haitian student who persisted, and every Haitian elder who kept our traditions, we are here.
