They were both married, but um Kate's mother had been told that she was infertile after she'd had Kate's elder sibling.

So they weren't careful and she ended up pregnant.

But uh instead of confessing to her husband, she tried to pass Kate off as her husband's baby.

But after six months, she couldn't lie anymore and she came clean.

They got divorced.

He had motor neuron disease.

And that that's a terminal illness.

So they knew he was going to die.
