The shape pulled me closer and closer until we were one.
It swallowed me whole.
When the dream ended I jolted upright back in the sleep lab.
I could hardly breathe from the pressure on my chest and my whole body tingled with the ghost of remembrance.

Or one of the nurses.
But when I looked to the doorway, my heart stopped.
It was lurking there.
Peering around the window between prison and sanctuary.
The monstrous shape from my dream.
Grinning with all those teeth and staring with those hollow eyes.
The light from the hall shone around what little of its body wasn't hiding behind the frame.
Its flesh pulsed like the surface of a membranous reptilian egg beneath which a nest of infant snakes struggled to burst free.
It inched closer with agonizing sluggishness, long fingers rippling in anticipation as a scream built in my throat for what felt like hours.
There was something else standing behind it.
A shape I couldn't distinguish.
Smaller and less intimidating.
But I couldn't look away from the creature for long.
Lest it lunge while I was unaware.
