But then, through the slit I saw it approach.
Its eyes lit up from deep within its head as it looked at me through my hiding place.
Then the creature pulled back its thin lips to reveal rows and rows of tiny square teeth.
They were children's teeth, little yellow nubs that ground together as its mouth contorted into a vile, crescent shaped grin.
I blinked, and its face was right in front of my own, leaning into the wooden structure.
Its rotten skin was stretched so thin it cracked from the pressure, a network of thin seams spider webbing across its face.
It was bloated and puckered.
as if a dozen layers of skin were squeezed beneath the outermost shell.
Its hands were similarly stretched and swollen.
with horribly long fingers that were as thin as a child's.
but rippling with dozens of closely spaced knuckles.
I felt its fingers curl around my shoulder.
Scattering across my back like tiny rats.
Then came a warm and wet sensation as those fingers burrowed into my flesh, past the skin and into the muscle.
Strangely enough it didn't hurt.
It didn't feel like much at all, actually.
Except an insertion of its physical being into the nebulous, fluid space of my body.
I was numb.
But it was a deathly cold numbness.
The kind you might feel when you wake up after sleeping on your arm before wondering if the limb is even there anymore.
