I've invited Jolene Mudley, who is an independent professional trustee and principal officer, to join us on today's episode to discuss an article that she wrote for the 2026 Sunlum Benchmark Survey.

So welcome to EBNET Stream, Jolene.

So without any formal or further ado or delay, what are we going to talk about today?

And I'm going to kind of lay the foundation and the groundwork.

The article you wrote was on independence of trustees and independence of thinking and decision making in these trustee boards.

And if I look back and I reflect on the conversation in this industry over the past while, independence is used in so many different ways.

So my first question really is, are we fooling ourselves when it comes to this unicorn of an independent trustee?

And what are your thoughts around that?

You've used a lot of words there that have kind of stuck in my brain.

And the first is ethical, which you've used more than once.

It's such a great point because independence and ethical are words that we'd expect of all trustees, not just independent trustees.

So are we saying that the role of all trustees is elevated?

Have we maybe also moved because of the consolidation into commercial umbrella funds and this kind of notion that an independent trustee or an independent principal officer kind of becomes the class captain almost in that environment?

I'd agree with that.
