whereas the day traders at the lower end were just you know getting getting wrecked with with tax and just losses wow so it's an interesting one okay that's a good lesson in that so quickly um but also as educationally as you can how does tax work for investors in australia
yes there's two main components so you've got the capital gains side of it and then the income side of it so the capital gains part is quite interesting and that's the part being hit with the new budget as well and typically
The really simple version is you buy it for some price.
If you sell it for more than that price in the future, you calculate the difference and that's your capital gain.
And then the government want a piece of that gain in tax.
And that's a capital gain.
If you sell it for less than you bought it, that's a capital loss.
And then that loss can be used to offset gains in that financial year or in the future.
So
It's very simple and it always gets talked about in that kind of simple terms.
But once you go a layer deeper into the parcel selection and that kind of thing, whether you're using things like FIFO or a min gain strategy, which we can get into a bit later, can massively impact the amount of tax you end up paying.
And then the other part is the income.
So it's things like dividend income from ordinary shares.
And then you've got distributions from ETFs, which are extremely common at this point.
And then even on the crypto side, it's the buy sells or the sells and swaps.
So your capital gains and then the staking is income.
So they behave quite similarly.
Yeah, so that's a perfect question.
And this is something people miss particularly around capital gains.
So the ATO have graciously allowed us a lot of flexibility with calculating capital gains.
