So this is the new ICE to EV scheme that the government has set up.
And it's basically a return of the old scrappage schemes.
If you remember back to 2010, when the government introduced us, you know, you got €1,500 extra for chucking in an old car against a new one.
That was meant to stimulate the industry at the time when we were all broke and when the troika was taking control.
And then even further back than that, which I'm old enough to remember, and you're probably not, but it was done back in the late 90s, early 2000s as well, as a way to get old, beaten up,
unsafe cars off the road in favour of newer machines and that was incredibly successful that pushed the Irish car market to unheard of heights 247,000 new cars in one year in the year 2000 so sadly I'm old enough to remember that but anyway you couldn't that aside you couldn't be anyway
So what's happening now is there is an existing €3,500 grant that you get from the SEAI under certain qualification terms to do with the price of the car, which you get off the price of a new EV if that's what you're buying.
What this scheme does is that tops that up by another €5,000.
But it's quite limited.
So there's two limitations to it.
First of all, it's funded to the tune at the moment of 10 million euro, because it's a pilot scheme.
And that 10 million euro of that is, 6.5 million is ring-fenced for rural buyers, and only, obviously, the remaining 3.5 million for people who live in Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick, and Galway.
The theory being that those people have access to good public transport.
