And they are very expensive to fix or replace when they do.

But the same is true of combustion engines and regular car electronics.

So it shouldn't be a point of fear.

All manufacturers pretty much provide you with an eight-year or up to 160,000 kilometer warranty on the battery from new that will replace the battery if it falls below 70% of its original energy storage capacity.

which is the point at which a battery in a car is considered to have served its life and it can go off for a second life as a wall storage battery or just be recycled, physically recycled.

You can recycle batteries endlessly.

It's one of the beautiful things about them.

So that's already there.

There is a company called Avelu, which is a German company, which has just introduced an aftermarket battery warranty to Ireland, whereby you pay a premium, basically an insurance premium, really.

And if the battery drops below a certain state of charge, or if it breaks, they'll replace it.

Well, they won't replace it, but they'll give you €3,000 for it.

And that can defray a lot of your costs.

So I think there should be a reasonable amount of confidence there with the batteries themselves, as long as when you go shopping, the first question you ask is, show me the battery state of health report.

Any good, competent dealer will just hand that straight across the desk at you, along with the service history.

If it doesn't have that, walk away.

I'm always wary of private market buying unless the seller is reasonably well known to you or known to someone you know.

I think it's because the problem is private sellers can be great.

There are great private sellers out there.

I'm not dissing them.

But ultimately, as the end consumer, you have no comeback.
