This is actually being addressed.

Well, oystercatchers are indeed fabulous, and it's one of the easier of our breeding waders to encounter because um they are still quite widespread as a breeder, and you see them a lot in the non-breeding spee uh season as well, but in particular in coastal areas.

Although it's one of our waders that will actually move quite quite away from water.

I often see them around um Dublin suburbs on lawns, even in the middle of roundabouts, probing for worms.

So I know a lot of people when they're beginning bird watching, they think waiters, you look at the pages, several pages in your field guide, and you think, Oh, they all look the same.

They're so you know, it's gonna be hard to get to grips with these.

Well, I always advise people to start with with the oyster catcher because essentially it's black and white, it's not these different shades of brown and grey and very cryptically plumage, it's a very standout black and white pied bird.

Uh, and uh, but they're not in

Without colour, they have this sort of wonderful tones of reddy-orange on the beak and sort of reddish legs as well.

The scientific name for them is Hematopus Australagus.

So Hematopus means bloodfoot, so that red legs, bloodfoot, blood legs, and Ostrolegus means collector of oysters, or the gathering oysters.

And it's quite interesting because I tend to think of them though, not so much as eating oysters, I think

Them as the quintessential Dublin bird, the Molly Malone bird, because their main foods are cockles and mussels.

That's what they love.

But they uh they also love to eat earthworms.
