And maybe that's what that wood pigeon was doing.
It may have been sort of making repairs to those nests.
It was that sort of weird nesting habit of pigeons and doves and their flimsy nest.
It led to one of the strangest and most alarming phone conversations I've ever had.
Years ago in Birdwatch, Ireland, I answered the phone and there was a lady on there who was really quite upset and so I had a lot of sympathy for her.
And she said that she'd found sort of a little bundle of sticks and a few quite roundish white eggs, a fair bit smaller than chicken eggs, she said, but still substantial, lying on the ground underneath one of her Leylandii hedges.
When she described to me, I said, well, that would sound to be the nest of a collared dove.
They famously make these really flimsy nests.
They love Leylandia, one of the only birds that do.
And what's happened is it was flimsy.
It fell down with a gust of wind.
It's on the ground and those eggs aren't going to hatch out.
There's nothing can be done for them.
The embryos would have chilled at this stage, so nothing will happen.
I'll never forget what she said.
She was so relieved and she said, I'm so happy that you told that to me because I was really worried they might be rat's eggs.
Well, you
know, we shouldn't laugh either.

Well, no, but it did make me worry a little bit about the state of the education system.
But still, I wasn't like that on the phone.
