There are several different breeds, some of them originating in Turkey and Hungary and other parts of Eastern Europe, where people bred them to have this sort of mad growth of feathers across their feet.

So it looks like they're wearing almost like large snowshoes or something over

feet.

They look very, very bizarre.

It's very cumbersome for the bird.

You can see how this wouldn't evolve in the wild because it really hinders the bird's survival chances.

But when it's in captivity and they're being fed and they're not sort of subjects.

Well, this is clearly an escape.

So it's escaped from an aviary or a dove cut or some pigeon fancy or probably quite close by.

I don't think it's attractive.

I don't think it looks good.

Now, the vast majority of birds have bare feet and bare legs.

You might see birds like rooks that have kind of shaggy trousers, but those are for their thighs coming down.

Most birds have bare legs covered in sort of scales, very reptilian like scales.

There's two major exceptions in Ireland.

One is the red grouse.

And the red grouse, like all grouse, they have fully feathered legs and feet, very downy, short feathers.

But they act like snowshoes in the grouse family.
