They allow them to walk on snow and spread their weight.
And this is a very unique adaptation to that family.
The other one, bizarrely, is the house martin, a member of the swallow family, a migrant that builds those mud nests under the eaves of the house.
And for some reason, and nobody knows why, they also have feathered legs and toes right to the tips of their claws.
They have short legs.
They don't really walk around.
They do walk a little bit
when they're getting mud to build their nest.
Maybe it's an adaptation for that.
One of the theories, and nobody knows for sure, maybe in the winter or the non-breeding season, it's thought they head somewhere to sub-Saharan Africa.
Having said that, the winter grants have never been discovered, which is kind of cool.
We still have this big mystery.
But it's thought that they may actually be high, high in the sky, such high altitude that they need to insulate their toes in a way that other birds don't.
But that's a pure guess.
Nobody knows for sure.
Well, it's funny you should mention that because we were looking at some little egrets the other day in flight.
