They're only about less than three kilometers apart by sea.

But you cross a time zone when you go between them.

So they're on a different time zone.

They're both part of Indonesia.

But Java, like the vast majority of Indonesia, the majority of the people here are Muslim.

So you hear the call to prayer in the morning.

You see people wearing Muslim attire, especially women.

But just across the water in Bali, it's majority Hindu.

And it's kind of Hinduism that's very heavily influenced by Buddhism.

So it's quite different.

And there's many different ethnic groups across all of these islands.

And it's a really fascinating place to be.

And then I'm looking forward to, in a few days' time, taking another ferry, going back to Bali for a little while,

but then taking another ferry, a very short hop, just 35 kilometres across to another island called Lombok, which is the next one to the east in the chain.

And it's not a far distance in terms of the physical travel, but it is a far distance in terms of the biogeography of it.

And the plants and the animals of Lombok are very, very different from those of Bali.
