So here in this part of the world, monkeys are par for the course.

And there's a particular species that you find not just in these Indonesian islands, but also through quite a lot of Southern Asia called the long-tailed macaque.

People who may have been to Thailand on holidays may have come across these.

They're

Sort of a pale grey monkey with sort of like a white kind of looking moustache on their face.

A long tail, as the name would suggest.

And they tend to be quite bold around humans.

They're quite tolerant of humans.

They're known for sort of coming in and robbing bins or robbing tables if they're left unattended.

Those kind of things.

In some areas, if they become habituated to people.

In other parts, like in a park I was in in Java today, they're much wilder than that and they actually give people a wide berth.

But there's a particular temple complex in Bali, which is just towards the southern peninsula on the island, which has become infamous for the behaviour of the long-tailed macaque monkeys there.

David Attenborough did a piece on this on one of his programmes in recent years, where the monkeys rob tourists, but they don't rob food for the tourists.

What they do is they have learned to rob things that tourists value, things like sunglasses or particularly smartphones.

They've learned that humans seem particularly attached to these black rectangles that we keep in our pockets.
