They're like the Dublin seagulls.
Well, exactly.
But they're smarter than that because what they do, you think, why does a monkey want sunglasses or want a smartphone?
What they do is they hold them to ransom.
They know we want them back.
And so what they do is they'll expect a bribe.
They expect to be given biscuits or chocolate or something like that to be given in order for them to relinquish control of these objects and give them back to the humans.
And they're quite aggressive about it.
It sounds fun and funny, but it's not.
They're very aggressive.
They sort of scream and bare their teeth.
And if the bribe isn't sufficiently good, if they're not happy with the chocolate or isn't the right brand of biscuits, they just fling your phone off the cliff.
So it's remarkable from one point of view that these animals can be so intelligent that they think of this.
It's very complex thinking and forward planning.
It's also very frustrating for tourists.
But it goes even further than that, because I sent you a couple of photographs
of one particular very large male macaque was posing at the edge of these cliffs.
There were several of them doing this, so sort of lounging there, looking very nonchalant, looking very friendly.
And I realized what they were doing because I saw it happen.
They are luring tourists in to take selfies.
