Has a long pointed snout like a shrew, big beady eye, and has this long bushy tail like a squirrel.
They scamper around in the trees.
And when I saw it, it immediately struck one thin memory in my mind.
Whenever you look at a programme about the extinction of the dinosaurs and the rise of the mammals, there's always some sort of proto-mammal that's seen coming out of the smouldering ash, the dead dinosaurs all over the place, this little thing sniffing the air and scampering around.
And they say, that's our ancestor, we all evolved from that.
That's clearly based on the tree shoe.
It looks exactly like that.
So I think of these tree shoes now as the base proto-mammal.
They're amazing.

They are.
They were an animal that nearly went extinct.
And that's one of the things here.
It's amazing to see that so much damage has been done to nature in this part of the world through all sorts of hunting and trapping of species.
But now so much is being done to put that right.
So the Javan deer, which is found in Java and in Bali and a few of the other islands, because it's a large deer, about the size of our red deer, a large creature, it was hunted almost to extinction.
But there's been a real conservation program, some sort of sanctuaries and some even captive breeding happening in Java and in Bali today.
And it's coming back now again.
